Fighting female genital mutilation in Egypt
The Egyptian government has pledged to step up its fight
against female genital mutilation in Egypt, where the vast
majority of Muslim and Christian women are subjected to
excision. The authorities are threatening to punish doctors
carrying out the operations, and have laucnhed an information
campaign. One association has for years held seminars in the
Beni Sueif region to break the taboo surrounding the problem.
